How to Shampoo & Condition Your Wig
What Products Should You Use?
We recommend that you use low pH products that are specially designed for human hair wigs, as they won’t contain any harsh chemicals that could damage your wig. Avoid alcohol-based products, as these will dry the wig out.
How Often Should You Wash Your Wig?
You should shampoo & condition your wig once per week, using low pH products and lukewarm water. Try to avoid washing the wig too frequently, as this can actually reduce its lifespan!
Before you wash your wig, gently comb it out until all tangles are gone (tip – start at the tips of the hair and work your way towards the cap).
To shampoo your wig, start by wetting the hair under lukewarm running water (we recommend you use your shower head if the wig is too long for your sink). Gently squeeze the wig to remove excess water, and then evenly rub a small amount of shampoo into the hair, from the base to the tips. Try to not rub, twist or wring the hair. Once you’re finished shampooing, rinse the hair until all product is removed and then gently towel dry before conditioning.
To condition your wig, apply conditioner and gently comb it through the hair with a wide-toothed comb (try not to stretch the hair when you do this). Avoid getting too much conditioner on the base of the wig, as this can cause wig hair loss. Leave the conditioner in for at least 15 minutes before you rinse it out.
Allow the hair to dry naturally, as this is gentle on the hair fibres, and then style as designed using minimal styling products (use coin-sized portions of serums and light oils every other day to prevent product build up). If you prefer to blow-dry your wig, make sure to use a heat protectant spray!
Some Bonus Human Wig Hair Care Tips!
- Store your wig on a stand that is smaller than the base of the cap – this will prevent the wig from stretching.
- Avoid exposing your wig to direct sunlight – this will fade the hair.
- If possible, try not to wear the wig while sleeping – this may result in hair loss, breakage or matting.
- Avoid contact with chlorinated water, salt water and hot water as this can damage the wig.
