Wig Terminology – 4 Common Wig Terms Explained

Wig terminology can be confusing, so we thought we’d start a handy wig glossary for you! Here are 4 common wig terms that are often used, and simple explanations!

Remy Hair

With human Remy hair, the cuticles are kept intact and then aligned in a unilateral direction to provide a completely natural look and feel. Collecting Remy hair is a delicate and somewhat painstaking process, and it means that every strand of hair remains in the same direction as it did when it was growing from the scalp. Remy hair is easy to manage, since the consistent hair follicles prevent tangling, and it is also durable, smooth, silky and shiny. Remy hair is not necessarily virgin hair, which means it may have undergone chemical processing.

Raw Virgin Hair

Raw virgin hair is hair that has never been altered by heat, steam or chemical processing (like colouring or perming). This hair is the purest, most natural and authentic hair you can buy. Raw virgin hair is collected from one donor, meaning the hair will be consistent in colour and texture. The quality of raw virgin hair is better than virgin hair, which is collected from multiple donors. As well as being pure, raw virgin hair is Remy, meaning all the follicles travel in the same direction. Raw virgin hair is truly the best you can get, and it is what we use at RouRou Doll Hair Candy!

Lace Front Wigs

Lace front wigs have a sheer panel of lace along the front hairline, and the strands of hair are sewn into the holes of the lace. The back of the wig cap is made of a stronger material that ensures the wig fits snugly and stays on the head. Lace front wigs offer comfort, style versatility and realism. At RouRou Doll Hair Candy, we make our lace front wigs with baby hairs around the perimeter of the lace, which produces a very realistic hairline. We also use tined lace that perfectly matches your skin tone.

Monofilament Wigs

Monofilament wig caps are made from a very fine, sheer material called monofilament. The hair is sewn into sections on the top portion of the cap. The hair fibres stick straight up and fall naturally depending on the length of the fibre. This makes it look as if the hair is growing from your head, and means that each hair can be parted and brushed in any direction – giving the most natural look you can get. Monofilament wig caps offer the most realistic appearance possible. They are highly versatile, and allow you to part the hair and style it in almost any way!
